Waste Oil Testing: Characterise the Feedstock First

Waste Oil Testing

Used engine oil is not a uniform raw material. It carries water, fuel, soot, wear metals, degraded additives and sediment, and each of those substances changes what a safe and efficient recycling plant must do. Waste oil testing turns that uncertainty into engineering fact, letting an operator decide whether a batch should be accepted, pretreated, blended, held or rejected before it reaches the main process line.

Sampling Defines the Result

A laboratory reading is only ever as good as the sample it comes from. Because water and heavier solids settle toward the bottom of a tank while lighter material rides higher, a surface grab gives a misleading picture. Samples must represent the whole batch and be collected in clean, dry, correctly labelled containers so each result stays traceable to its source.

Water, Solids and Viscosity

Water content sets the dehydration load and the risk of foaming or corrosion, and it must be distinguished between free, emulsified and dissolved forms. Sediment and solids signal the filtration and fouling burden ahead, while kinematic viscosity flags fuel dilution when it reads too low and severe degradation when it runs too high.

The Chemistry That Matters

Chlorine contamination invites corrosion and process problems, sulphur influences the treating requirement, and metals forecast ash, residue and catalyst concerns. No single limit fits every refinery because the acceptable feed depends on the plant’s own design, so the sensible reading is to turn each result into a concrete operating requirement rather than a pass or fail label.

From Results to a Routing Decision

Testing finishes not in a report but in an action, whether that is deeper dewatering, blending a troublesome batch into a safer mix or rejecting a source outright. Klean Industries builds the full chain from visual inspection through laboratory measurement to a classified feedstock and a matched recycling route, so capacity is never wasted on material the equipment was not built to handle.
