Integrating Visbreaking Units With Other Refinery Processes
Visbreaking Unit Integration
Visbreaking unit integration turns a simple viscosity reducer into a strategic asset, because the real value of a visbreaker emerges from how it connects to the units around it. By lowering the viscosity of heavy residues, it upgrades them into lighter, more valuable products the rest of the refinery can process.
Starting From the Bottoms
The visbreaker takes its feed from the atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, treating the heavy residue that would otherwise become low-value fuel oil. Routing that hot feedstock directly saves heat and improves overall energy efficiency before the thermal cracking even begins.
Feeding Downstream Units
The gas oil produced during visbreaking can be routed to the fluid catalytic cracker or the coker after hydrotreatment, increasing the feedstock available for transport fuels. Integration with hydrotreating is essential to stabilise the olefinic, sulfur-bearing products so they meet finished-fuel specifications.
Managing the By-Products
Visbreaking also generates acid gas that must be captured and handled through amine treating and sulfur recovery, and a lower-viscosity residue that joins the fuel oil pool with far less need for valuable diluent. Each interface, when planned correctly, protects compliance and liberates higher-value streams.
The Economic Payoff
Compared with delayed coking or hydrocracking, a well-integrated visbreaker offers a mid-capital route to reduce heavy fuel oil, lift middle-distillate yields, and improve margins. For refiners facing shrinking heavy-fuel demand, visbreaking unit integration is a cost-effective way to extract more from every barrel.
