Giving Used Oil a Second Life Through Advanced Re-Refining
Used Oil Second Life
Millions of litres of used oil are discarded every year, but re-refining now offers that material a genuine second life. Unlike simple recycling, re-refining restores used lubricant to near-virgin condition, creating high-grade base oil for a range of automotive and industrial uses.
What Re-Refining Achieves
Re-refining removes contaminants such as water, dirt, fuel, and spent additives that have built up during service. The result is base oil that performs on par with virgin product, while lowering the pressure to extract and process new crude oil.
The Multi-Stage Process
The material first passes through filtration and dehydration to remove solids and water. Vacuum distillation then separates light and heavy components, hydrotreating strips sulfur and residual contaminants, and fractionation grades the oil by viscosity before additives are blended back to meet original equipment specifications.
Where Re-Refined Oil Is Used
Re-refined lubricants serve automotive engine oils and transmission fluids, industrial hydraulic systems and gearboxes, and heavy equipment in construction and mining. As emissions standards tighten, marine and aviation operators are also turning to these products for specific applications.
Why It Matters Economically
Re-refining consumes far less energy than producing base oil from crude and supports circular-economy goals. With growing market demand and government incentives, investing in re-refining offers both environmental value and a durable commercial opportunity.
