How to Size Used Oil Refining Capacity Correctly
Used Oil Refining Capacity
Choosing the right used oil refining capacity matters more than any single equipment feature, because size decides whether a project runs profitably or becomes a persistent operating headache. A machine that is too large idles expensively, while one that is too small runs at its limits and invites breakdowns.
Start with Real, Sustained Volume
Capacity should track the long-term average supply of waste oil, not a best-case or peak estimate. Operators need a clear picture of daily and monthly volume, the stability of that supply, and any seasonal swings. Sizing against an optimistic scenario almost always leaves equipment underloaded and fixed costs unrecovered.
Rated Capacity Is Not Real Throughput
A nameplate figure assumes clean feedstock and uninterrupted operation. In practice, water, sludge and variable oil quality reduce what a plant actually processes, so effective throughput reliably falls below the rated number. Capacity should be chosen with a buffer against the rated value so the system runs within a controlled range rather than at its ceiling.
Match Capacity to Feedstock and Mode
Heavier, more contaminated or mixed oils force conservative feed rates and lower effective capacity. Batch systems, sized in tons per cycle, suit variable feedstock but yield less predictable daily output, while continuous systems, sized in tons per day, need consistent supply but deliver steadier throughput. The most difficult expected oil type, not the average, should drive the decision.
