Types of Used Oil Refinery Plants and What They Recover
Used Oil Refinery Plants
There is no single kind of used oil refinery plant; the right facility depends on the feedstock, the scale, and the product the operator wants to sell. Understanding the categories is the first step in choosing a plant that matches the oil actually being collected rather than buying a name.
Re-refining Plants
Re-refining is the fullest treatment, and the route that returns the highest-value product. A re-refining plant runs used oil through distillation, hydrotreating, and solvent extraction to strip contaminants and rebuild a base oil of a quality close to virgin stock, suitable for renewed lubricant production. It closes the loop on the oil lifecycle and is the strongest claim an operator can make on recovered quality.
Fuel-Recovery Plants
Where the objective is energy rather than lubricant, a fuel-recovery plant converts used oil into a diesel-like or burner fuel through thermal and catalytic steps. The product specification is looser than for base oil, which suits dirtier or more mixed feedstocks and lower capital budgets. This route captures the energy value of the oil even when it cannot be returned to lubrication duty.
Choosing by the Numbers
The decision between routes is really a decision about feedstock quality, product price, and scale. Cleaner, consistent collections favour re-refining; variable, contaminated supply may only support fuel conversion. Either way, the plant’s classification determines its equipment, its permits, and its economics, so matching the facility type to the recovered oil is what prevents a costly mismatch.

Match the Plant to the Feedstock
The gap between a profitable recovery plant and an underused one is usually a mismatch between the plant type chosen and the oil actually available.
Klean Industries provides feasibility studies, engineering, and turn-key delivery for used-oil recovery facilities, matched to feedstock and product.
