Sulfur Removal Methods for Used Oil and the Routes That Fit
Sulfur Removal Methods
Sulfur is the hard limit in used oil refining: too much, and the oil is downgraded a grade, or fails specification entirely. The three industrial sulfur removal methods, hydrodesulfurization, oxidative desulfurization, and adsorption, each fit a different combination of throughput, product target, and capital, and choosing the right one separates a profitable plant from a struggling one.
Hydrodesulfurization: The Hydrogen Route
Treating hot oil with hydrogen over a catalyst converts organic sulfur into hydrogen sulfide gas, which is carried away. It delivers the deepest cuts achievable, which is why it anchors high-value Group II and III base oil routes, but it carries heavy pressure-vessel capital, a constant hydrogen feed, and a downstream gas-recovery obligation.
Oxidative Desulfurization: Hydrogen-Free
Oxidative methods convert sulfides and related compounds into polar sulfones at modest temperatures and near-ambient pressure, using an oxidant and a catalyst, after which a solvent separates the sulfones. It costs far less to install than a hydrogen plant and suits smaller or lower-tier units, though it struggles to reach the very lowest single-digit ppm levels on its own.
Adsorption: Polishing or Standalone
Adsorption holds sulfur onto porous media such as activated carbon or clay. As a polishing step after a catalytic process it can pull residual sulfur from hundreds of ppm down to a low band; on its own it only makes sense at small scale, where frequent replacement does not overwhelm operating cost.
Handling H₂S Responsibly
Any hydrogen route produces hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas tightly regulated and illegal to vent. A sulfur-removal project must budget its downstream recovery unit from the start, choosing amine-plus-sulfur-recovery at large scale and liquid scavenging options for smaller output; it is a built-in requirement, not an optional afterthought.
