Pyrolysis does not simply destroy waste — it separates it into a slate of recoverable products, each with its own market and end use.

Three Phases, Three Products

When organic material such as tires, plastics, or biomass is heated in the absence of oxygen, it decomposes into three phases: a liquid oil, a combustible gas, and a solid carbon-rich residue. The exact balance of these outputs depends on the feedstock and the process conditions, but all three carry commercial value.

Pyrolysis Oil

The liquid fraction — often called pyrolysis oil or tire-derived oil — is a hydrocarbon product that can serve as a fuel or be refined into chemical feedstocks. For tire pyrolysis and plastic pyrolysis, this oil is frequently the primary revenue product, and Klean produces it to a consistent specification for downstream buyers. Recovered Carbon Black

The solid output of tire pyrolysis is recovered carbon black (rCB), a fine carbon material that can substitute for virgin carbon black in rubber, plastics, and coatings. Recovering it from spent tires closes a material loop that would otherwise require new fossil-derived carbon black.

Syngas

The gas stream, composed mainly of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and light hydrocarbons, is combustible and can be used to generate heat or electricity — often to power the pyrolysis plant itself, improving the energy balance of the process.

Char and Steel

Depending on the feedstock, pyrolysis also yields a carbon char used as a soil amendment or filtration medium, and — in the case of tires — steel wire recovered for recycling. This is the point of pyrolysis: nothing is left over that has to be thrown away.

Product Quality Is the Differentiator

The commercial value of these products hinges on consistency. Feedstock preparation, temperature control, and post-processing all determine whether the oil and carbon black meet buyer specifications. A feasibility study that models feedstock quality against target product grades is what separates a marketable output from a low-value residue.
