A Step-by-Step Look at the Plastic Pyrolysis Process

Plastic Pyrolysis Process

The plastic pyrolysis process converts waste plastic into pyrolysis oil, non-condensable gases, and a solid carbon residue by heating the material in an oxygen-starved reactor. Understanding each stage helps operators maximise liquid yield, run the plant safely, and keep product quality consistent from batch to batch.

Preparation and Feeding

The process starts before the reactor. Incoming plastic is sorted to remove non-plastic contaminants and shredded into uniform flakes so that heat reaches every piece evenly. Consistent sizing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to hold a stable reaction and protect downstream equipment from metals, glass, and other debris that can damage internals.

Controlled Thermal Decomposition

Once sealed and purged of air, the reactor is heated indirectly to a range where long polymer chains break into smaller hydrocarbon molecules. Because no oxygen is present, the material decomposes rather than burns. Choice of reaction temperature, heating rate, and catalyst all shift the product slate, so process control directly shapes both yield and quality.

Condensation and Gas Recycling

Hot hydrocarbon vapour leaving the reactor passes through a multi-stage condensation train and cools into liquid pyrolysis oil. The gases that resist condensation can be piped back to fuel the reactor burners, cutting external energy demand and improving the plant’s overall efficiency. The solid carbon residue is discharged separately and can be marketed as a reinforcing or pigment-grade material.
