How Advanced Catalysts Improve Naphtha Hydrotreating

Naphtha Hydrotreating Catalysts

In a hydrotreating unit, equipment and control systems matter, but the single factor that most shapes performance is the catalyst. Naphtha hydrotreating catalysts determine how completely sulfur, nitrogen and reactive olefins are removed, how much hydrogen the unit consumes, and how long it runs between cycles, which makes catalyst choice a strategic decision rather than a technical afterthought.

What the Catalyst Must Do

The primary job is deep desulfurization, converting mercaptans, sulfides and thiophenes into hydrogen sulfide so the treated stream meets tight sulfur limits. Beyond that, a well-engineered catalyst saturates olefins that would otherwise form gum and coke downstream, and it removes nitrogen species that poison platinum-based reforming catalysts. Together these functions stabilise the feed and protect the reformer.

Common Catalyst Families

Cobalt-molybdenum catalysts offer dependable desulfurization at moderate severity and reasonable cost, making them an economical default. Nickel-molybdenum systems add stronger hydrogenation for deeper sulfur removal and better olefin saturation, while nickel-tungsten formulations suit high-throughput units that demand long cycles and resistance to deactivation. Engineered alumina supports with optimised pore structure further improve dispersion and reduce pressure drop.

Selecting for Your Unit

The right catalyst follows from the feedstock, the target product specification, and the existing reactor conditions. Matching activity to real operating limits, rather than to a product sheet alone, is what lets a refiner lift throughput and extend cycles without pushing the unit beyond its design envelope.
