Motor Oil Pollution: The Cost of Disposing Oil the Wrong Way
Motor Oil Pollution
A single litre of used motor oil, tipped into a drain or poured onto the ground, is enough to foul a much larger volume of clean water. Motor oil pollution is one of the most concentrated and most avoidable sources of environmental damage in routine vehicle and machinery maintenance.
What the Oil Carries
Used motor oil is not just spent petroleum. In service it picks up fine metals, among them lead, zinc, and cadmium, along with the by-products of combustion and engine wear. When the oil is released to the environment, those contaminants travel with it: they leach into soil, reach groundwater and surface water, and move up through aquatic life and the wider food chain, where heavy metals accumulate rather than break down.
The Downstream Damage
The harm is not confined to the spill site. Oil that reaches a waterway coats the surface, starves the water of oxygen, and damages fish, plants, and the organisms they depend on. In soil it changes the ground’s ability to support life and can render land unusable. Once dispersed, the pollutant is far harder and far more expensive to recover than it would have been to contain in the first place, which is why the cheapest intervention is simply not to let the oil reach the environment at all.
Containment Is the First Defense
The countermeasure is mechanical before it is anything else: collect used oil in sealed, clearly labelled containers, keep it away from drains, soil, and other waste streams, and deliver it to a collection point or recycler. Proper disposal is what keeps a reusable resource from becoming a permanent pollutant, and it is the difference between a litre of oil that is recovered and one that contaminates the water supply.

Keep Used Oil Out of the Environment
The operators and depots that aggregate used motor oil at volume face real liability in every leak, and real value in recovering the oil instead.
Klean Industries provides feasibility studies, engineering, and turn-key delivery for waste-to-value facilities that recover used oil before it can reach soil or water.
