Mitsui Chemicals Develops AI Agent for Chemical R&D
Chemical Structure AI
Mitsui Chemicals has developed its own artificial intelligence agent that autonomously investigates and organises information about compounds from the chemical structural formulas found in scientific literature and research reports, and it has started an in-house pilot trial of the system.
Reading Structural Formulas
The Tokyo-based company says its chemical structure AI can read chemical structural formulas, something that had previously been unfeasible for machine systems. The agent combines image and text information from literature in an integrated way to autonomously identify and extract information about compounds, enabling advanced literature searches that conventional methods could not achieve.
Broader Compound Intelligence
Beyond identifying compound names, the agent can simultaneously obtain related information recorded in the literature, including uses, physical properties, manufacturing methods and experimental conditions. When more data is needed, it consults chemical databases and web search information, and it is equipped with a report generation feature that arranges findings into a format tailored to researchers’ needs, supporting later analysis and decision-making.
An 80 Percent Time Saving
Initial validation confirmed that literature reviews conducted using the agent reduced the time researchers spent on investigation by at least 80 percent, with reviews that previously took about a month shortened to roughly a day. By combining the agent with the chemical expertise of its researchers and engineers, the company aims to free staff to focus on more creative R&D activities rather than repetitive literature screening.
Pilot to Full Operation
Mitsui Chemicals plans to complete the pilot trial before the end of fiscal 2025 and bring the agent into full-scale operation during fiscal 2026. The development reflects a wider push among materials and chemical companies to apply artificial intelligence to accelerate discovery, cut the time spent on literature analysis, and streamline the research pipeline across polymer and specialty chemistry.
Turning Waste Into Value At Scale
While Mitsui Chemicals uses AI to accelerate chemistry, Klean Industries applies advanced thermochemical technology to a different kind of conversion: turning waste into value. Klean’s pyrolysis and gasification platforms recover recovered carbon black, pyrolysis oil and clean energy from end-of-life tires and waste streams, with gasification and energy-from-waste projects running around the world.
