Solvent Extraction vs. Hydrotreating: Choosing the Right Used Oil Refining Route

Hydrotreating vs Solvent Extraction

When upgrading used oil into re-refined base oil, the purification stage decides the final product quality. Two technologies dominate the options, and understanding hydrotreating vs solvent extraction is the key to selecting a process that matches both your feedstock and your target market.

How Solvent Extraction Works

Solvent extraction relies on differential solubility. A chosen solvent selectively dissolves contaminants such as aromatics, oxidation products, and additive residue, leaving a cleaner raffinate of useful oil behind. The solvent is recovered and reused, and the process runs at comparatively mild temperature and pressure with lower capital cost.

How Hydrotreating Works

Hydrotreating reacts used oil with hydrogen under heat and pressure over a catalyst. Sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and unsaturated compounds are converted to gases and stripped away, producing base oil with excellent colour, stability, and viscosity index, often meeting Group II or III specifications.

Key Differences in Output and Cost

Solvent extraction offers a lower initial investment and lower energy use, but it removes fewer sulfur and nitrogen compounds and can leave liquid or solid waste to manage. Hydrotreating delivers a broader impurity removal and a higher-grade product, yet demands high-pressure vessels, hydrogen supply, and periodic catalyst regeneration.

Choosing the Right Route

The decision turns on feedstock contamination, required end-product quality, and budget. Operators targeting high-performance Group II or III base oil generally favour hydrotreating, while solvent extraction suits facilities with milder product requirements and tighter capital plans.
