Diesel Fuel Recovery From Used Engine Oil
Diesel Fuel Recovery
Used engine oil holds long hydrocarbon chains that, once broken and recombined, can yield a genuinely useful energy stream. Diesel fuel recovery turns a disposal liability into a product, but it is not a single step. It is a sequence of cracking, separation and refinement that must be controlled end to end if the result is to meet a usable fuel specification.
The Chemistry of Cracking
Recovery begins by splitting heavy hydrocarbon chains into smaller fragments under heat, then recombining those fragments into the diesel range. Thermal treatment relies on temperature to break the bonds, while catalytic cracking uses engineered materials that lower the required temperature and steer the reaction more selectively toward diesel-range molecules.
The Recovery Sequence
A workable route conditions the oil first, removing water and solids, then cracks the feed and refines the product. Acid and alkaline washing neutralise acids and strip back sulphur, treatment removes colour and odour, and desulphurisation brings the sulphur level to an acceptable limit before any final additive step.
Yield and Quality Drivers
How much diesel emerges depends on feedstock cleanliness, catalyst choice and reaction conditions. Cleaner, higher-grade used oil contains more usable hydrocarbon, and a tailored catalyst raises both the quantity and the quality of output. Cetane rating, viscosity and flash point must then be held within the range that makes the product usable in engines and boilers.
Respecting the Process Limits
Feedstock varies, catalysts deactivate, and environmental rules carry real cost. A recovery route that accounts for these realities keeps the plant holding its quality standards rather than chasing them after complaints arrive. Klean Industries sets out the cracking, fractionation and quality checkpoints so every batch leaves as a defined, saleable fuel.
