CleanAI in Canada: AI Is Optimizing the Clean Economy

AI Optimizing The Clean Economy

Artificial intelligence is moving out of search engines and chatbots and into the physical economy — and Canada is emerging as one of its most important proving grounds. A new report from the CleanAI Initiative, CleanAI in Canada, maps how AI applied to the clean economy transition is reshaping the energy, materials, waste and resource sectors that Klean Industries builds for every day.

The report defines cleanAI as the application of artificial intelligence to the clean economy transition — where AI is a core enabler or differentiator of solutions across energy, food, water, infrastructure and resources. It is AI moving beyond large language models and into the grids, plants and supply chains that make up most of the global economy.

Canada’s CleanAI Position

The findings are substantial. Canada is home to roughly 230–250 cleanAI ventures, representing one in four of the country’s AI companies. Those ventures have raised more than US$3.5 billion in venture capital since 2020, plus roughly US$1 billion in grants and debt financing. By deal count, Canada ranks third globally for cleanAI — behind only the United States and the United Kingdom — with Vancouver the leading region on capital raised and the Greater Toronto Area holding the largest concentration of ventures.

The sector already supports an estimated 7,000–7,700 direct jobs, with the potential to add roughly 30,000 more by 2030 if growth capital follows the innovation pipeline. Globally, the report cites a US$600 billion market forecast for AI-enabled climate and sustainability sectors by 2028, and the International Energy Agency finds AI applications across industry, transport and buildings could cut 1.4 gigatonnes of CO₂ by 2035 — nearly triple the projected emissions of the data centres that run them.

Where CleanAI Meets Klean’s Physical Economy

For Klean Industries, the report confirms what two decades of delivering waste-to-energy and resource-recovery plants has shown: the clean economy is won in physical systems. CleanAI’s seven subsectors — energy and power, materials and chemicals, agriculture and food, transportation and logistics, resources and environmental management, waste and recycling, and cleanAI enablers and infrastructure — are exactly the industrial domains where tire pyrolysis, plastic pyrolysis and waste-to-energy plants convert waste into recovered carbon black, pyrolysis oil, steel and energy.

AI-driven optimization — predictive maintenance, process control, digital twins and real-time output tuning — is the intelligence layer that makes these physical plants more efficient, lower-emission and more profitable. KleanLoop, Klean’s blockchain traceability platform, provides the verified data backbone that an AI-optimized circular economy depends on, tracking feedstock and product across the supply chain.
