Why Equipment Alone Is Not Technology
As investment in tire pyrolysis and recovered carbon black production continues to increase, Klinkhamer’s presentation will address a fundamental industry challenge: purchasing equipment does not by itself create a commercially successful tire recycling operation.
A pyrolysis reactor is only one component of an integrated process.
Commercially viable tire pyrolysis requires the coordinated integration of feedstock preparation, thermal conversion, process controls, automation, operating procedures, maintenance, carbon upgrading, product finishing, quality assurance, environmental compliance and market development.
The distinction is particularly important for recovered carbon black.
Pyrolysis char is not automatically a finished rCB product. Producing consistent, specification-grade recovered carbon black requires downstream processing, upgrading, classification and quality control capable of delivering repeatable material properties for specific industrial applications.
Variables including feedstock consistency, thermal control, residence time, carbon finishing, ash content, particle-size distribution, surface characteristics and operating discipline can all influence product quality and customer acceptance.
Equipment can be purchased. Technology must be engineered, integrated, operated, optimized and continuously improved.
Klinkhamer will also address the importance of tire pyrolysis oil (“TPO”), recovered steel and other circular commodities to the overall economics of tire recycling projects.
Industry Experience
Jesse Klinkhamer has spent more than two decades working across the solid waste, resource recovery and energy sectors, with particular emphasis on advanced thermal conversion, tire pyrolysis, recovered carbon black and circular economy systems.
In 2010, Klinkhamer became the first speaker to present specifically on recovered carbon black at the World Carbon Conference, when the commercial rCB industry was still in its early stages. He is also an active voting member of ASTM International Committee D24 on Carbon Black and Committee D36 on Recovered Carbon Black.
The development of recognized terminology, testing protocols and quality standards is increasingly important as recovered carbon black moves toward wider commercial adoption in tire, rubber, plastics, coatings, inks and other industrial applications.
Recovered Carbon Black Symposium
The Global Polymer Summit’s two-day Recovered Carbon Black Symposium will bring together participants from across the tire, rubber, carbon black, recycling and advanced-materials sectors. Topics will include tire pyrolysis, recovered carbon black production, material upgrading, testing, standards, regulation, market development, commercialization and tire pyrolysis oil.
Participating organizations identified in the symposium program include Bridgestone Americas, Cabot, Continental ContiTech, Cyclonaire, G3C Technologies, KBR, Kera Energy, Notch Consulting, RJ Lee Group, Robert Weibold GmbH and Klean Industries. The symposium is scheduled for September 29–30, 2026, at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville.
