Why ASR Is Hard to Recycle — and Why That Makes It a Processing Opportunity
ASR Recycling
Automotive shredder residue is hard to recycle for one simple reason: it is a mixture. Bound-together plastics, rubber, glass, fibres and foam at small particle size defeat the sorting and separation techniques that clean, single-material streams respond to.
Mechanical recycling wants a known, consistent polymer. Shredder residue is the opposite — heterogeneous, contaminated and variable from load to load. That is why the default has been landfill, and why the residue has persisted as a waste problem long after the metals problem was solved.
The Difficulty Points to the Route
The same mixture that defeats mechanical sorting is exactly what a thermal process handles well. Gasification does not need the material sorted; it needs its energy and its mineral and metal fractions, which are present regardless of how mixed the feed is.
In other words, the property that makes ASR a recycling challenge — its heterogeneity — is neutralised by processing it thermally, where the split happens by physics rather than by hand-sorting. The hard-to-recycle material becomes a straightforward feedstock.
From Barrier to Business Case
That reframing is the commercial point. Hard-to-recycle is not the same as low-value. A stream that carries fuel energy, trapped metals and minerals is genuinely valuable once the right process is applied — which is why operators who solve ASR gain a feedstock advantage competitors who landfill it do not have.
