Rotary Kiln for Sewage Sludge Treatment

Rotary Kiln Sludge Treatment

Sewage sludge is one of the most difficult waste streams municipalities produce, high in water, variable in composition and costly to dispose of. A rotary kiln tackles it in two useful ways: drying the sludge to slash its volume and disposal cost, or thermally processing it further to recover energy and leave a smaller, more stable solid residue.

Drying and Volume Reduction

Sludge leaves a treatment plant mostly water, and hauling that water to landfill is expensive. A rotary kiln dryer evaporates the moisture, cutting weight and volume dramatically, so the same disposal route handles far more material and costs far less. The dried product can then be reused, incinerated or further processed.

Thermal Treatment and Energy Recovery

Beyond drying, the rotary kiln can thermally convert dried sludge, recovering the energy content locked in its organic matter. The kiln’s agitation handles the sludge’s stickiness and variability, and its controlled atmosphere lets the process be tuned to either combustion or pyrolysis, closing the loop on a waste stream most facilities simply pay to remove.
