Which Polyethylene Types Can Pyrolysis Recycle? HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and More

Polyethylene Pyrolysis

Polyethylene is the world’s most common plastic, and it comes in several grades — HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and cross-linked XLPE — each with a different structure. Pyrolysis accepts all of them, plus the mixed polyethylene that mechanical recycling cannot cleanly sort.

High-density PE, low-density PE and linear low-density PE differ in their chain packing and density, but they all decompose thermally into oil, gas and char. Cross-linked PE, used in cable insulation and pipe, resists melting — which is precisely why the thermal route suits it where mechanical recycling fails.

Why Pyrolysis Fits Polyethylene

The value of pyrolysis for polyethylene is that it does not demand the clean, single-grade, sorted feedstock a mechanical recycler needs. Mixed, contaminated or multi-layer polyethylene — the material most likely to end up landfilled — converts to fuel oil, gas and carbon black instead.

That tolerance for the mixed, the film and the cross-linked is what positions pyrolysis as the complementary route to mechanical recycling: mechanical takes the clean fraction, pyrolysis takes what mechanical rejects.

A Route for the Whole Plastic Stream

Between them, the two routes cover the full polyethylene stream — clean material becomes new polymer, and the rest becomes fuel and carbon products rather than waste.

Partner With The KleanTeam to Recycle Every PE Grade

Safe. Clean. Profitable. One Proven Partner.

Klean Industries builds plastic pyrolysis plants that handle the full polyethylene range — including the mixed, contaminated and cross-linked grades that would otherwise be landfilled.

Klean’s Key Advantages:

  • ✅ Thirty-plus years engineering commercial tire and plastic pyrolysis plants.
  • ✅ 3 recovered carbon black (rCB) plants built in India over the past 2 years.
  • ✅ KBR added Klean’s proprietary TyreNova tire-pyrolysis technology to its IP portfolio.
  • ✅ KleanLoop blockchain provides end-to-end feedstock traceability.
