Plastic Pyrolysis Rotary Kiln: Turning Mixed Plastic Waste into Fuel and Feedstock

Plastic Pyrolysis Rotary Kiln

Most plastic is designed to be thrown away, and much of it is too mixed or contaminated to recycle mechanically. A rotary kiln offers a route for exactly this fraction: heating plastic waste in an oxygen-free atmosphere until the polymer chains crack into smaller hydrocarbons, producing a fuel oil and hydrocarbon gases that can be recovered or refined.

How Plastic Pyrolysis Works

Mixed plastic waste is fed into a continuously rotating, indirectly heated kiln, where it is raised to pyrolysis temperature without oxygen. The long polymer chains thermally decompose into shorter molecules, releasing a vapour that condenses into pyrolysis oil, while a non-condensable gas stream is generated that can be used to help power the process. The process suits the mixed, soiled plastics mechanical recycling rejects.

Why a Rotary Kiln for Plastic

The rotary kiln’s tumbling action handles the variable composition and moisture of real plastic waste, providing even heating and continuous throughput. It turns a hard-to-recycle material that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated into a feedstock that displaces crude-derived products.

Put Mixed Plastic Waste to Work

Klean’s rotary-kiln plastic pyrolysis systems recover fuel and feedstock value from the plastic fraction the recycling stream cannot use.

Klean Industries delivers turn-key pyrolysis plants across tire, plastic and biomass applications, with a field record that includes three recovered carbon black plants delivered in India over the past two years.
