ORC for Engine Exhaust Heat Recovery
ORC Engine Exhaust Heat
Reciprocating engines, the gensets, gas engines and diesel units that power everything from plants to ships, convert only part of their fuel to shaft power. The rest leaves as exhaust heat and in the cooling system. An ORC system recovers that heat and converts it to additional electricity, boosting the output of the very engine that produced it.
How the Heat Is Recovered
The engine’s hot exhaust is passed through a heat exchanger that transfers its heat to an ORC working fluid. That fluid vaporises and drives a turbine, producing power on top of what the engine already generates. The approach is often called bottoming, because the ORC rides underneath the engine cycle and harvests what it leaves behind.
Why It Raises Efficiency
A standalone engine wastes a large share of its fuel as heat; adding an ORC captures part of that waste as extra electricity. For facilities running large gensets or gas engines continuously, the recovered power improves fuel efficiency, cuts energy cost and shortens the payback of the machinery, all from a heat stream that was simply being dumped.
