ORC for Biomass Power Generation: More Power From the Same Fuel
ORC Biomass Power
Biomass plants generate electricity by burning fuel to raise steam and driving a turbine, but a conventional steam cycle only captures the high-temperature part of that heat. An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system recovers the low-temperature heat that remains, generating additional power from the same fuel and lifting the plant’s overall output and efficiency.
How ORC Fits a Biomass Plant
The ORC module takes heat that a steam system would otherwise reject, typically low-to-medium temperature process or exhaust heat, and runs it through a closed loop charged with an organic fluid. That fluid boils at a far lower temperature than water, so the recovered heat still produces pressurised vapour to spin a turbine and drive a generator, delivering electricity the plant would otherwise leave on the table.
Why It Matters for Biomass
Biomass fuel is bulky and its cost is dominated by collection and transport, so getting more electricity from each tonne is the direct route to better economics. Adding ORC turns a biomass plant into a more complete combined heat and power system, generating both the process heat the site needs and extra power from heat that once went to the stack or a cooling tower.

Get More From Every Tonne of Biomass
The difference between a good biomass plant and a great one is how much of the fuel’s energy becomes electricity, and ORC is how you capture the rest.
