ORC Combined Heat & Power (CHP)
ORC Combined Heat Power
A power-only ORC rejects its spent heat to the environment, but an ORC configured for combined heat and power does not. It captures the condenser’s heat and delivers it as useful thermal energy, to a process, a district-heating loop or a building, generating electricity and heat from the same input at the same time.
How CHP Works in an ORC
The ORC’s condenser, the point where the working fluid cools and returns to liquid, is where the cycle gives up its heat. In a CHP arrangement that heat is routed to a user instead of a cooling tower, raising the temperature of a water loop that then serves heating or process duty. The electrical output is unchanged; the plant simply now delivers two products from one heat source.
Why CHP Doubles the Value
Separately, a plant’s electricity and heat are two different costs. A CHP ORC produces both, lifting the overall use of the input heat toward 80 percent or more, far above a power-only cycle. For facilities with a simultaneous demand for power and warmth, that efficiency translates directly into lower energy cost and a smaller carbon footprint.
