Fluidized Bed Boiler: Clean Combustion for Difficult Fuels
Fluidized Bed Boiler
A fluidized bed boiler burns fuel suspended in a bed of hot, air-blown solids, typically sand, rather than on a fixed grate. The churning bed mixes fuel and air far more thoroughly than conventional combustion, which lets it burn difficult, variable fuels cleanly and at lower temperature, the reason the design dominates biomass and waste combustion.
How Fluidization Works
Air blown upward through the bed makes the solid particles behave like a boiling liquid, suspending the fuel among them. That intense mixing exposes every particle of fuel to oxygen and heat, so even wet, low-grade or variable fuels burn completely, and the lower combustion temperature suppresses the formation of nitrogen oxides.
Why It Suits Biomass and Waste
Biomass and waste fuels are inconsistent, ranging from wet wood chips to refuse-derived fuel, and a fixed grate struggles with that variability. The fluidized bed tolerates it, accepting a wide range of fuels without the clinkering and incomplete combustion that plague other designs, making it a cornerstone of modern waste-to-energy and biomass power.
