Biomass Boilers for Power Generation: Clean Heat and Power from Wood Waste
Biomass Boiler Power Generation
A biomass boiler burns wood and other organic fuels to raise steam, and that steam can either drive a turbine to generate electricity or provide process heat, or both, in a combined heat and power (CHP) configuration. For mills, manufacturing plants and waste-to-value facilities with a steady supply of wood waste, the biomass boiler is the most economical route to clean, renewable, on-site energy.
How a Biomass Boiler Generates Power
Biomass is fed onto a combustion grate where it burns, and the hot flue gas raises steam in the boiler. The high-pressure steam is expanded through a turbine coupled to a generator to produce electricity, while the remaining low-pressure steam is drawn off for drying, heating or other process duties. In a CHP system this single fuel flow delivers both power and useful heat, pushing total efficiency from around 30 percent for power-only towards 60 to 80 percent.
Biomass Fuels for Boilers
Biomass boilers accept a wide range of renewable and recovered fuels:
- Wood chips, bark and sawdust from sawmills and forestry.
- Wood pellets and briquettes.
- Agricultural residue, including straw, husks and shells.
- Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and other non-recyclable wastes.
Boilers for Dryer and Process Heat Applications
Beyond power, biomass boilers are the workhorse for thermal duties across the waste-to-value and processing sectors. They supply the heat that runs dryers for sludge, biomass and organic inputs, and provide process steam for manufacturing. A well-matched boiler lets a facility turn its own waste into the heat and power it already needs, instead of buying both from outside.

Power Your Plant on Its Own Waste
A biomass boiler only pays when its fuel supply, steam demand and power output are sized together, otherwise you are buying fuel and still short on heat.
Klean Industries designs and delivers turn-key waste-to-energy and biomass systems, with a field record that includes three recovered carbon black plants delivered in India over the past two years and a further five under letter of intent.
