A vehicle is only partly circular when its metal is recycled and its residue is landfilled. True circularity for end-of-life vehicles is reached when the residue — the plastics, rubber, glass and minerals that remain after metal recovery — is processed back into useful outputs too.
Automotive shredder residue is the last open loop in vehicle recycling. Its metal fraction already circulates; its residue does not, not without a deliberate processing step. Closing that final loop is what moves vehicle recycling from partial to complete.

The reference plant shows what a closed loop looks like in practice. The residue’s energy is recovered as electricity, its residual metals return to commodity markets, its mineral fraction vitrifies into construction aggregate, and even the zinc-rich ash is recycled. Nothing leaves as landfill.
That completeness is the definition of circular, and it is achieved by treating the residue as a resource with multiple value streams rather than a homogenous waste.
