'Green' trucks? Yup, they're getting their own award
The Green Car Journal has already established itself with the widely recognized and touted Green Car of the Year award, handed out annually at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
But now, the emerald wave is rolling out a bit farther. The publication is establishing a Green Truck of the Year award, to be given at the San Antonio Auto & Truck Show in Texas in November.
“Green” trucks? Isn’t that a bit like jumbo shrimp or military intelligence? No, says Ron Cogan, publisher of the Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com.
“While trucks are traditionally viewed in terms of functionality and style, improved fuel economy and lighter environmental impact have become more important in recent years,” he says in a statement. “Green Car Journal’s new Green Truck of the Year award recognizes these achievements.”
The truck will be picked based on environmental attributes plus functionality, versatility, safety, value and style.
“Trucks are big in Texas and a high-profile part of our San Antonio Auto & Truck Show,” says Pam Crail, president of San Antonio Auto Dealers Association, also in a statement. “Acknowledging improved environmental performance in pickups will help truck buyers understand that driving ‘greener’ doesn’t mean giving up features and functionality required for their trucks.”
