Sun rises on Manhattan's highest rooftop solar scheme

Towering 225 metres above the ground, the skyscraper at 60 Wall Street has just become home to Manhattan’s largest rooftop solar scheme. The buildings occupant,
Deutsche Bank, yesterday confirmed it had switched on 122.4 kW of photovoltaic panels at its American headquarters, in a bid to cut its electricity bills and decrease carbon emissions by 100 metric tons a year.

As well as being the largest in Mannhatten, Deutsche Bank claims the installation is the highest elevated solar PV flat panel array in the world.

The solar scheme is the third completed by Deutsche Bank in North America as the company aims to deliver on its pledge to become “carbon neutral” by 2013. A fourth 1.5MW solar project is expected to be completed later this year at the banks’ Parsippany, New Jersey facility.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg welcomed the news as a key part of the city’s PlaNYC, which includes more than 400 environmental targets that are due to be achieved by the end of 2013.

“New York City has the most ambitious sustainability plan in the world in part because we’re working with private sector partners to reduce our carbon emissions, rely on cleaner energy sources, and meet the goals of our long-term sustainability program, PlaNYC,” he said.

“Deutsche Bank’s landmark achievement builds upon our shared work to build a greener, greater New York.”
